At the kind invitation of Branwen Smith-King (a Bermudian coach in the Athletics Department at Tufts University, Mass), the Bermuda Pacers track team attended the AAU Region 1 North Club Championship on Saturday, 9th June, 2001. Coach Cal Simons lead the team of six, comprising Tre, Justin, Deanne', Dorian, Trey, Charlene. It was a beautiful day, hot but not humid, and the team was in fighting spirit.
First up was Justin in the long, gruelling 3000m race (in which the boys and girls up to age 14 ran together). After about 3 laps (of 7.5 laps) Justin has put a good lead between himself and the rest of the pack with only one 13 year old in front. Seen at the right, Justin finishes first (11:02.01 mins) in his age group.
Three members of the team competed in the long jump: Tre has a seen here after his first jump before finishing with a first place (15'). Next, Charlene takes to the air in the 11 year category and secures a first place (11' 4"). Then Trey has his turn in the pit and took a first (10' 11").
Seen here to the left is Tre, in the 100m dash, as he crosses the line in first place (13.32 secs). To the right, Tre storms home in the 200m with another first place (27.35 secs).
Next the 1500m - Justin and Dorian wait at the congregation point after the call. But it is not long before Dorian sets out on his heat and finishes first (5:32.87 mins) with a commanding lead. Following in the next heat is Justin who also takes a first (5:13.82 mins).
The 800m saw more Pacer's success with Trey, Charlene, Deanne' and Dorian all competing. At the left is Trey in his heat leading the pack at the first turn. And he is still further ahead as he begins the second lap. Seen to the right, Trey crosses the finish line for another Pacer's first place (2.43.64 mins).
In the next 800m heat, Dorian (fourth 2:42.32) and Charlene can be seen charging into the first turn before taking a first place (2:39.80) .
Then in the next 800m heat, Deanne' lead the pack. The next picture shows Deanne' coming around the bend on her second lap and then a good finish (2:27.77).
The 400m was also a very exciting race. Trey seen to the right coming around the last bend before heading for the finish and another first place (1:13.61 mins).
And Charlene to the left in an exciting finish, just a hair width ahead for first place (1:09.78)
In the final heat, Deanne' has a tremendous performance, and takes another well deserved first place (1:03.83 mins).
Making sure that everything and everyone was in order was Lloyd Van Putten, Vice President of the Club. After the successful day, Van Putten makes preparations for the celebration and barbecue at the track.
On behalf of all the Pacers' competitors (and the hangers-on), our very best thanks to Branwen Smith-King for her kind assistance and hospitality.
